The end of the month

What came in, what went out, and the share of each category.

Month against month

What got better, what needs work, and what you can afford.

The Compare tab puts up to 12 months side by side: money in, money out by group and category, and what was left, with a total and an average across the months shown.

The Compare tab with the last three months side by side: money in, Essentials, Lifestyle, Saving & investing and what's left, each with an average. How it works

The details

  • Compared with last month

Money in, money out and what's left each show how they moved against the month before.

  • So far, or the full month

Look only at what already happened, or include what's still scheduled until the month ends.

  • Income broken down too

See where your money came from, not just where it went: salary, freelance work, everything coming in.

  • Late items, your call

Include overdue bills in the numbers, or leave them out.

  • Transfers stay out

Moving money between your own accounts never counts as income or spending.

  • Nothing hidden

A transaction that still needs a category is counted in the totals and flagged, so the numbers are always complete.

Questions

Good to know

Is SetBucks a budgeting app?

Not in the envelope sense. SetBucks doesn't ask you to set spending limits for each category. It shows where your money actually went, what's still scheduled, and how the month is heading, so you can decide what to change.

What are Essentials, Lifestyle and Saving & investing?

Three groups that every spending category belongs to. Essentials covers home, bills, groceries and transport. Lifestyle covers dining, subscriptions and shopping. Saving & investing is the money you set aside.

Can I change the categories?

Yes. You start with categories made for a household in the United States, and you can rename them, add your own and pick their icons.

What's the difference between “So far” and “Full month”?

So far counts only what has already gone through your accounts. Full month adds what's still scheduled for the rest of the month.

Is there a more detailed view?

Yes. Behind the simple view there's an advanced one, laid out like an income statement: revenue, variable costs, contribution margin, fixed and variable expenses, investments and the net result, each line open to the categories behind it.
